A herbivore is an animal anatomically or physiologically evolved to feed on plants, especially upon vascular tissues such as foliage, fruits or seeds, as the main component of its diet. These more broadly also encompass animals that eat non-vascular autotrophs such as mosses, algae and lichens, but do not include those feeding on decomposed plant matters (i.e. detritivores) or macrofungi (i.e. fungivores). Herbivores form an important link in the food chain as primary consumers, converting plant carbohydrates into energy that carnivores and omnivores then consume.

Lore & Background

The oldest known herbivorous tetrapods include Desmatodon (Diadectidae) and Tyrannoroter (Pantylidae). Early anamniotic tetrapods fed on other aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates, and some amphibians evolved into terrestrial carnivores. The first amniotes were insectivores, but later forms became larger and carnivorous before some eventually adapted to a herbivorous lifestyle. In addition to Diadectidae, four other tetrapod clades independently evolved adaptations towards herbivory from the Late Carboniferous to early Permian: the Captorhinidae, the parareptilian Bolosauridae, and the two synapsid clades Edaphosauridae and Caseidae.
