Shoaling and schooling are social behaviors exhibited by many fish species. Shoaling refers to any group of fish that stay together for social reasons, while schooling is a more coordinated form where fish swim in the same direction at the same speed. These behaviors are widespread, with about one quarter of fish species shoaling all their lives and about half shoaling for part of their lives. They provide significant benefits including defense against predators, enhanced foraging success, and improved hydrodynamic efficiency.

Forage fish, such as herring, anchovies, and menhaden, compensate for their small size by forming schools. These schools can become huge, with herring schools in the North Atlantic estimated to occupy up to 4.8 cubic kilometers, containing about three billion fish. Herring schools have very precise arrangements that maintain constant cruising speeds, and they react rapidly to predators, forming a vacuole around a moving threat.
